Contrary to popular belief, not every breakthrough or epiphany Nic is blessed with ends up written on our bedroom wall. In fact, most of the best ideas get written in “Dr. Nico’s Lab Book.”
This book is the stuff of legends. It is filled with some of the most unique concepts you could imagine. Well…really stuff only Nic could imagine. He tries to keep it close by because when Nic comes up with a concept, it is getting written down somewhere, so it might as well be in a collection that is easily accessible, mobile and actually meant to be written on!
It has been such an amazing experience to watch firsthand the process of my husband coming up with a concept, getting excited, rushing to his Lab Book, and furiously scribbling his ideas down. Because it is shocking how many of those late night nuances and early morning musings turn into tangible, real-world innovations that positively impact people’s lives.
Of course, not everything is immediately that clear. Sometimes I feel like these writings are like cave drawings or hieroglyphics – something only Nic can understand and even illegible at times! Nic’s most desirous talent is an ability to draw better; at least better enough to aid in communicating the amazing ideas he forms in his head. The lab book and our wall sometimes receive the prelude to a concept that gets polished and refined over days of living in Nic’s brain and then later end up developing. So it’s often a matter of figuring out which ideas to further develop.
One of Nic’s favorite things to say is that “success is so often knowing what to say no to and what to say yes to.” This is especially hard when the ideas are flowing at a pace that they do in my husband’s head. Saying no to something, however, always leads to the right thing because inevitably, the thoughts he has are born from the sensibility we both have to issues, pain points or concerns that we or others have in the ecosystem of utopian business that we’re trying to create.
As Socialized Commerce continues to grow into something of which the Porter family and our best second family can be immensely proud, and as Trunited impacts more and more households beyond its current reach, Dr. Nico’s Lab Book only grows in legend. (And in pages! I should say “books” not book.) I honestly believe these concepts and ideas will be held in museums one day.
In the meantime, we want you to benefit from Nic’s thoughts as much as possible, and so we will be offering more of those thoughts in this space on my blog. Nic will give you direct access to his perspectives, insights, and developing innovations right here. No need to travel to a museum…yet. Just bookmark this page and wait for Dr. Nico’s Lab Book to come to you!
