With Arizona producing some incredible weather this time of year, there is still no denying the lack of abundance of things to do here. Hiking, shopping, eating and you have about covered it all. But there are several events happening around here that many people don’t know about so I’ve decided to put together a calendar of things to do at the beginning of each month to help keep you in the loop and add some fun! So here it is:

Illumination Symphony of Light – nightly until January 14, Illumination is Arizona’s largest holiday, drive-thru, light show.  During the mile-long drive, you will experience millions of holiday lights synchronized to your favorite holiday music.  End your journey by entering Holiday Boulevard by parking your car and walking through a giant ornament. This park/eat/play area features bounce houses, food trucks, photos with Santa, selfie stations and other holiday, memory-making experiences. ZooLights – nightly until January 14, Zoo Lights shines with millions of lights, a 3-story lighted tree, hundreds of glimmering light displays, lakeside Music-in-Motion shows and more. Location: Phoenix Zoo 455 North Galvin Parkway, Phoenix AZ 85008. Hours: 5:30-10:30 PM nightly. Cost: Free for children 2 and under, $19.95 for adults ($17.95 if purchased online ahead of time). Value Nights (January 8,9,10,11,12,13,14) are only $12.95 when purchased online.

The Art of Ice Cream Experience – Daily until February 28, The Art of Ice Cream Experience is a Pop Up experience celebrating America’s love of ice cream.  You will find instagram worthy photo opportunities in each individually themed exhibit room, each paying tribute to a favorite ice cream flavor or frozen treat. In each room you will have an opportunity to engage with the exhibit through colorful and interactive art. Ice cream treats and samples are provided throughout the experience. Location: 4224 N. Craftsman Court, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM. Closed Mondays. Cost: Free for kids 3 and under, $15 for Kids 4-11, $25 for Adults.

23rd Annual Glendale’s Glitter & Glow Block Party – January 6, Take in the stunning 1.6 million LED lights, along with more than 20 hot air balloons glowing throughout 16 blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale. A highlight for visitors will be specially-shaped balloons, as well as mass glows, in which the balloon pilots will fire the balloons all at once to create an illuminating spectacle. The dazzling scene of vibrant glowing colors and twinkling lights, combined with musical performances and delicious food and beverages, will be a feast for the senses! Hours: 4:00-10:00 PM. Location: Downtown Glendale, Free shuttles available from Glendale Community College at 59th Ave and Olive. Cost: Free.

Arizona Bridal Show – January 6th and 7th, This show features more than 400 of the valley’s top wedding experts all in one place. Start your wedding planning with us; from finding the perfect venue and photographer to organizing your dream honeymoon, we’ve got everything for your big day covered! Location: Phoenix Convention Center South Building, 33 S. 3rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004. Hours: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Cost: 2 tickets for $12.

Movies in the Desert at Odysea: Secret Life of Pets – January 13, Guests will enjoy a live outdoor screening of Secret Life of Pets beginning at 6:30pm under the stars. The ninety minute pre-movie entertainment show will begin at 5pm featuring a Character Meet and Greet, Learn to Draw Snowball, Max Paper Craft, Pet Photo Sharing Station and a Prize Wheel with giveaways. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs/blankets while food and drinks will be available for purchase at the surrounding restaurants including El Encanto, Humble Pie, Johnny Rockets, Frozen Penguin Ice Cream, Nektar Juice Bar, Opa Life Greek Café, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, The Kakery, Modern Grove Views an MG Fresh Concept as well as Docktails Beach Café. 15th Annual Rock n Roll Marathon & ½ Marathon – January 12 to 14, Starting at CityScape, run through Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale on this fast, flat course and listen to more than 70 live bands, 40 cheer squads, aid stations each mile, music at every mile, and a free headliner concert. Location: Starts at CityScape in Downtown Phoenix. Cost: $29.99-1mile, $49.99-5K, $69.99-10K, $109.99-Half Marathon, $119.99-Marathon

Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction – January 13 to 21, Every January at WestWorld in North Scottsdale, people, including the rich and famous, flock to the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction. It is billed as the world’s most valuable classic car auction. Location: WestWorld of Scottsdale, 16601 N Pima Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Hours: Jan. 13th – 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM, Jan. 14th – 8:00 AM-3:00 PM, Jan. 15th – 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM, Jan. 16th-20th – 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM, Jan 21st – 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Cost: Tickets start at $8 for kids, $17 for adults when purchased in advance. 

Katy Perry: Witness The Tour – January 19, Gila River Arena 9400 W. Maryland Ave, Glendale, AZ 85305. 7:30 PM. Tickets start at $100.

Follow Your Heart Disney on Ice – January 18-21, Follow your heart straight to adventure at Disney On Ice! Just keep swimming with Dory and new pal Hank from Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory as they set out to find her parents and discover the devotion of family. Arizona Brunch Bash – January 20, Arizona loves brunch, so we are putting together a festival to celebrate some of the best restaurants in the brunch game serving up tasting size portions of the brunch items they do best. Brunch Bash will also feature the brunch beverages we all love – Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Screwdrivers, beer and wine. We will have live music and a beach. Yes, we are rolling sand into Downtown Phoenix for this fun event. So grab a beach ball, put on your flip flops and let’s Brunch on January 20th in Downtown Phoenix. Location: Cityscape Downtown Phoenix, 1 E. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ. Hours: 12:00-6:00 pm. Cost: $8 when purchased online, $12 at the door, food costs extra.

Snow Day at Desert Ridge Marketplace – January 20, Play in 40 tons of snow, enjoy face painting, music, games and other activities during this annual tradition at Desert Ridge Marketplace. About 4,000 people are expected to play in the snow, collect swag bags from retailers, win prizes, decorate cookies provided by Albertsons and more. Location: Desert Ridge Marketplace 21001 N. Tatum Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85050. Hours: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Cost: Free.

Jersey Boys – January 23 to 28, Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons—the rise, the tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. Location: Orpheum Theatre 203 W. Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85003. Tickets start at $65.25.

Adam Sandler Live – January 25, Comerica Theater 400 W. Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85003. 7:00 PM. Tickets start at $49.50.

Arizona Balloon Classic – January 26 to 28, On Saturday and Sunday mornings, January 27th & 28th, the sky will be filled with colorful hot-air balloons participate in thrilling “Hare & Hound” races from the grassy fields of the Goodyear Ballpark for a spectacular sight of mass and color.  Spectators can walk on the field and experience the balloons inflation and lift off.  Photo taking is invited. DESERT GLOWS on Friday and Saturday evenings, January 26th & 27th are our most popular attended events.  A field full of illuminated, tethered, hot air balloons will glow in time to music. Hot Air Balloon rides, Family Fun Zone, Hot Air Balloon Tether rides, Kids FREE Breakfast (Saturday ONLY), Fireworks (Saturday ONLY), Live Entertainment, sampling, and many other exciting events.  Retail shopping and commercial exhibits for purchases or browsing.  Bring your appetite, as there will be a HUGE variety of festival foods favorites available to purchase. S’more Sweets Festival – January 27, Sweets Fest attendees will taste their way through massive sundaes, cotton candy towers, candy-topped waffles, chocolates, cupcakes, lollipops and a seemingly never-ending assortment of other sweet treats. Guests at this year’s inaugural event, can expect an abundance all things syrupy, sugary and crave-able in this Candyland come to life event. Take a leisurely stroll through the Lollipop Forest or the Cupcake Commons in what can best be described as a giant “Candyland Come to Life.” Partake in pie-eating, karaoke and an array of other family-friendly entertainment options to work off those calories consumed. Location: Founders Park 22407 S. Ellsworth Rd, Queen Creek, AZ. Hours: 1:00-6:00 PM. Cost: $5, Family four pack for $15.

Tacolandia – January 27, Phoenix New Times is proud to present Tacolandia! The event will feature unlimited taco samples from 45 of the city’s best taquerias ranging from trending hot spots to authentic street style, live entertainment, cash bars, and awards in various categories. Come and celebrate your love for Phoenix’s best tacos. Location: Margaret T. Hance Park, 1202 N. 3rd St. Phoenix, AZ. Hours: 1:00-5:00 PM. Cost: $25 general admission, $45 VIP admission.

Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf Tournament – January 29 to February 4, In North Scottsdale the pro golfers get together for the first PGA tournament of the year. The PGA Waste Management Phoenix Open Golf Tournament is held at the TPC Scottsdale course at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. This tournament attracts the largest crowds of any PGA event. Location: TPC Scottsdale, 17020 N. Hayden Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85255.

Hamilton – January 30 to February 25, Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now. Location: ASU Gammage, 1200 S. Forest Ave. Tempe, AZ. Cost: Good luck! Hard to get but so worth it!
